LONGFIELD, Alan Paul - Jan. 18, 1939 - Dec. 10,
2008 -
With profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of Alan Paul
Longfield, B.A.(Queens), M. Ed. (Toronto),
devoted husband of Judi, wife of 38 years, and proud father of son
Michael.
A former Toronto resident and elementary school teacher, science
consultant and principal with the Toronto District
School Board, Alan lived in Whitby for more than three decades. In
retirement Alan turned his passion and talent to local history,
co-authoring seven fiction and nonfiction books about the wartime
efforts of Canadians associated with "Camp X" in Whitby, "Camp 30"
in Bowmanville, and "Defence Industries Limited" in Ajax.
Alan's spare time was consumed watching movies, reading voraciously,
listening to Beethoven, Bach,
and Mozart, and recently a trip to Wales.
He is deeply missed by family and friends.
Visitations will be held at W.C. Town Funeral Chapel, 110 Brock
St. E., Whitby on Fri Dec. 12th from 7-9pm
and Sat. Dec. 13th from 11am-12 noon followed by a service in the
chapel at 12pm in celebration of his life.
In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to the Heart
and Stroke Foundation of
Canada or the Lakeridge Health Whitby Foundation. |

Shirley Neal.

Morgan runs away from work…his brother runs away from
marriage…and their Mother can’t seem to run away from either.
Life has always held surprises for the Westfield family. The
father fell off a cruise ship, Clint became a hockey star with
a fetish for woman’s clothing, and Morgan wants to return to
the sixties. The only problem is, he was born in the
seventies. Their Mother threw out the butter and redecorated
their rooms so that they wouldn’t come back…but they did. |
The Usual Sacrifice is a 3-minute horror/comedy by LA

have you quaking in your boots and then shaking with laughter.

2006
Quebec Film Reps Meet OdaRepresentatives of Quebec's film community say they are optimistic
about the province's lack of film funding following a meeting with
Minister of Heritage Bev Oda.
"Minister Oda was extremely attentive, and listened very
carefully to what we had to say," says producer Denise Robert (Les
Invasions barbares), one of 16 stakeholders who sat down with the
minister on June 21. Robert adds that Oda "was very open to what we
had to say, and asked very intelligent questions."
The meeting was prompted by the most recent round of funding to
Quebec filmmakers from the Canada Feature Film Fund at Telefilm
Canada, which turned down such noted filmmakers as Robert Lepage (La
Face cachée de la lune) and Louis Bélanger (Gaz Bar Blues).
Michel Pradier, director of French operations for Telefilm's
Quebec office, said at the time that funding to the federal agency
has not kept pace with the burgeoning Quebec film industry, which in
recent years has seen popular hits such as C.R.A.Z.Y. and Maurice
Richard matched by critical praise for the likes of the
Oscar-winning Les Invasions barbares.
The stakeholders are asking for $20 million in additional
funding. Robert and producer Roger Frappier (Night Zoo, The Decline
of the American Empire) served as spokepersons.
The minister has been oddly quiet on film and TV issues since
taking her post in February, and Robert concedes that the
Conservative Party has a reputation for being cool on culture. But
Oda didn't fit the sterotype, she says. "On the contrary, Minister
Oda seemed very open, appeared to understand our problem of
underfunding and seemed to get that this industry is important."
The province is almost single-handedly responsible for the
success of Telefilm's effort to boost the box-office take on
domestic films to 5%. By the end of 2005, the end of the five-year
program, the market share for French-Canadian films had hit 26%,
compared to 1.1% for those in English.
Robert and Frappier described the evolution and popularity of
Quebec cinema.
"We have spent a long time and energy to build up this audience
base," Robert recalls telling the minister. "We have reached a
critical mass. If we don't deliver, the audience will lose interest
and move away from Quebec cinema. They will simply go back to the
foreign films that they were choosing to see 15 years ago, before we
made these gains."
And yet, Robert says many of Oda's questions were telling. She
asked why it was important for the government to support the film
industry and "asked us quite a bit about tax credits, how they work
and how effective they are," perhaps indicating that the Tories
would rather arrange for some kind of tax break than an actual cash
infusion.
A spokesperson for the minister says Oda is studying the requests
of the Quebec stakeholders. She will meet with them again in the
second week of July.
Liberal heritage critic Mauril Bélanger was not at the meeting,
but says Quebec's film industry needs support.
"Quebec's homegrown film has taken off. We should be
acknowledging that success in a permanent way, not just a temporary
measure," he says. "At the same time, we shouldn't penalize the rest
of the country."
Also at the meeting were producers Pierre Even (C.R.A.Z.Y.),
Nicole Robert (Horloge biologique), Jacques Bonin (Duo), Luc Déry (Congorama,
Familia) and Marc Daigle (Octobre). They were joined by Céline
Pelletier of the APFTQ, Éric Tessier and Lise Lachapelle of the
Association des réalisateurs et réalisatrices du Québec, and
representatives of groups including the Union des Artistes, the
Société des Auteurs de Radio, Télévision et Cinéma and the
Association canadienne des distributeurs et exportateurs de film.
The next deadline for French-language submissions to the CFFF is

July 2006
TVOntario Upping Education, Eyeing Ads
TVOntario is going digital, thanks to a $25-million boost from the
province, and will refocus its programming on education as part of a
major overhaul of the pubcaster and its French-language sister, TFO,
announced in late June.
For children, that means 13 hours more per week of the TVOKids
programming block. For grownups, that means more civic-minded
programming, a "tweaking" of its movie lineup, and the cancellation
of Studio 2. The long-running news flagship will be replaced by the
multi-platform public affairs show The Agenda with Steve Paikin. The overhaul follows a review of TVOntario launched last year at
the behest of the provincial government, which itself followed
occasional criticism that the channel had strayed from its
educational mandate.
But CEO Lisa de Wilde, tasked with the review upon her arrival at
TVO last fall, is playing down the politics in favor of the "long
overdue need to catch up and go digital." "I think the media environment has changed so much... the need
for a public organization like ours is unique," she tells Playback. TVO will switch all its production equipment to digital by
September 2007 and is talking about offering content on multiple
platforms.
Between now and then, TVO will also roll out a new, more
educational line of programming - filling its weekday slots with
literacy shows for preschoolers and fun-but-informative material for
older kids, all backed up by an online community for parents. The changes mean little for producers, says de Wilde, predicting
that the channel will order shows and docs in the "same proportion"
as before. "Documentaries are a very powerful tool for citizenship," the new
theme of TVO's programming for adults, she says.
The channel is also splitting from TFO - setting up the French
outlet as a separate broadcaster with its own management and budget
- and is looking for new ways to make money, possibly through
advertising. It's not an idea that's likely to be taken quietly by
some TVO viewers, even less so if the channel's new programming is
encouraging "public engagement."
De Wilde answers that it's also in the public's interest to
balance the books. "Télé-Québec has advertisements," she notes. "There is a way to
do it that doesn't harm the mandate."

|
Member of FAMEd, Richard Russell,
will be at the Old Mill Restaurant where John Manley will be
in attendance at 5:30 pm (April 28 ).
Richard will be taking part because Finance Minister John Manley has
compromised his government's commitment to our fragile national
identity by cutting $25 million from the Canadian Television Fund.
That's a thin slice of the federal budget, but a deep cut to a
program that has enriched production quality -- and built audiences.
The fund has received $100 million from Ottawa each year since 2000,
to help Canadian production companies employ Canadian writers,
directors and actors to tell Canadian stories. The new budget
slashes that support by a quarter. |
|
CTF support is confined to drama,
documentaries, variety shows, performing arts, and children's
programs.
The challenge of preserving and strengthening Canada's identity and
culture is as old as our country, yet as current as the latest
debates on foreign policy, western alienation, and First Nations
treaty rights. It is an inescapable concern for any federal
government -- and is directly addressed by the CTF.
The fund could be cut if it were ineffective or redundant -- but
neither condition applies. The Canadian Television Fund is
well-conceived and well-executed.
The federal government should reverse its short-sighted decision. |
|
|
The BIG news is, we are doing a
movie now, and the more members that
can get involved and share their many talents...the better chances
we will have of drawing in more film interest for the future.
Normally talent without experience doesn't get the opportunity to
show itself. Here's the chance to learn the ropes and earn the much
needed credit for future work. We have looked forward to this sort
of opportunity since FAMEd's beginning. This is why we are
together...lets make it happen! |

July 2002
Roger Cormier of
Newcastle
Entertainment has a production coming to his studio
and they will be accessing the FAMEd.ca data-base for various
production talents and services BEFORE they hire in Toronto!
Thank you Roger! |
|
|
|
Roger stated how FAMEd has grown
from four people only a year ago to over seventy now. Since then
he's opened his studio, filmed a documentary, is working on several
productions, and as mentioned above, has a Toronto Production
manager making a movie at Roger's studio and our data base will be
access for everything from locales to actors, musicians to set
builders. By filming in Durham they get a 3% rebate from the gov't,
so the more they can get out here, the more they save, the more jobs
we get and EVERYBODY wins!
FAMEd.ca will bring in film makers from all over
the world not just Durham Region or Toronto. We have different
locales, and, we all know that media/entertainment has no boundaries
any more. |
